What Is A Podcast?

A Podcast is like a radio program (audio Podcast) or television program
(video Podcast). Each program has a collection of individual shows that you can
listen to or watch - whenever you want! What’s even cooler is that these
individual shows can be listened to or watched on your PC or by using your
portable MP3 player.

Here are some examples:

  1. Listening or viewing Podcast using a PC:
    • Digital Media Player
      • iTunes
      • Windows Media Player, etc.

    • Web browser (embedded player on a Webpage)
      • Flash player
      • QuickTime player, etc.
  2. Listening or viewing Podcast using a portable MP3 player:

I also compare Podcasting to “audio/video on demand.” It gives
consumers the flexibility to “tune-in” when they choose, thereby creating a
time-shifting experience. Consumers do not have to be there for the live or
scheduled broadcast. With Podcasting, consumers determine the time when
to playback the content and where. Even better, once they subscribe to a
program (show) it is sent to them each time the content producer or
publisher creates a new show.

In a more technical sense, Podcasting is the syndication of
audio/video files using Really Simple Syndication (RSS) technology. It
works in the same manner as a standard RSS feed reader for Blogs. The
difference is that the subscribed feed contains an audio/video file within it.
Which means that (as mentioned above) instead of “reading” content in your
RSS feed reader, you can listen or watch the content on your desktop
computer or download them to a portable MP3 device.

So, there you have it, a quick “down and dirty” look at the concept of
Podcasting and how it works (in my own words). But, please, don’t stop
learning about it here. Please go to Wikipedia.org and other resources to
get a broader look at this technology.
