We’ve all read those stories about people who started off with one tiny product, mailing it out to buyers from their spare bedroom and building up a website which gradually stocked more and more products as time went on. Before they knew it they had a thriving business and they had to move into proper business premises and ditch their regular job because they were doing so well. But how often does this really happen? Does it seem more common than it actually is, purely because we tend to hear about these rags to riches stories on the news and on the internet?

The real news story of the past few years has undoubtedly been the explosion of Web 2.0 websites. They may come in all shapes and sizes but underneath they all have the same characteristics ? namely that they are sites which allow their members to help create them. The website creators provide the structure, the ideas and the tools, and the members provide much ? if not all ? of the content. This is a far cry from many websites online today, and indeed it looks to be providing something of a window into how more and more websites will operate in the future.

One of the top news stories of current times has to be the increasing worry over the state of our environment. We have undoubtedly been abusing it for many years, and just lately it seems as if our follies are starting to come back to haunt us. You only need to look at the number of landfills that are full to overflowing to see how bad we are at taking care of our planet. While efforts to recycle are definitely a strong step in the right direction, there is a lot more that we can do to protect the world if we are to survive long into the future.

It’s touted to be the next best thing in the world of the internet. Just imagine being able to enjoy a coffee in a restaurant and browsing the internet on your mobile phone at the same time. But that is the problem. How many people really do imagine doing just that?

If you’re trying to sell something online it would make sense to target as many people as possible in the hope of making lots of sales, right? Actually no ? nothing could be further from the truth. Your best bet is to target a much smaller group of people with an offer which is specifically tailored to meet their needs.

There are some things that every website needs. A content area is critical, displaying your text, videos, products, or other primary information. You need a section for your major links, of course, and if they are not drop-down lists or dynamic menus, you’ll also want a position for the minor links of that section of your site. And don’t forget your text links; the search engines like those. You probably want a banner, or a logo, or maybe both. Some sites will also need a section for advertisements, affiliate links, or shopping cart checkout buttons.

In writing there is a term called ‘passive voice’. In literature this is where the narrator tells the reader what is going on instead of allowing dialogue and event descriptions to SHOW the reader the events of the story. In the first case the reader is not very involved in the action of the story, but in the second scenario they are not only invited into the full body of the story, but they feel as if they are part of the action.
In web design you have to find a balance between simply showing your site visitor what you have to offer and being pushy in an effort to make a sale.

Now that you have a basic understanding of what you want your website to accomplish, you can start concentrating on what you want it to look like. To that end, it is time to consider graphics. Graphics aren’t necessarily just eye-catching highlights; they can be integral to the overall user experience. Your layout may be based around a main graphic; your primary linking structure may be based on custom buttons. Your banner, logo, and miscellaneous images may all play their roles in drawing the eye to key links and content.

It amazes me how many times I’ve seen people wanting a website “like this”. Where this indicates another existing site. And every time, I have to give a slight sigh and shake of my head. Turning to other sites for inspiration is definitely a wise thing to do. In fact, when you are designing yours, the second thing you should do (after keyword selection) is type a couple of your keywords into the search engines and look at what the businesses at the top are doing. These are your competition. More to the point, they are the most successful members of your competition.
