Sell Model Trains And Railways On Ebay
Model train enthusiasts come in various guises, from collectors of items originally designed as toys (with or without moving parts); to scale model enthusiasts whose main interest is rare, vintage, working models appealing more to adults than children. These tips will help you achieve your share of this massive market on eBay:
* Well-known toymakers like Bing or Marklin attract the highest prices at auction and a well-preserved toy can fetch spectacular profits. Most toys were heavily used so perfect specimens are extremely rare, unlike scale models designed for collecting and cherishing. So expect perfect toys in their original packaging to fetch the highest prices.
* Hornby is the name to follow for scale models with high resale potential. It’s also the name to look for on the world’s most collectable engines and carriages, tenders and stations, bridges, track and landscaping features.
* Whoever the maker, look for famous-name trains and expect them to be worth three or four times the price of less familiar subjects. For example, a 5 inch gauge model of the Welsh Quarry 0-4-0 tank locomotive No. 1, made by S. F. Price, fetched £2,400 at Christie’s, who also sold a Tyrer-made gauge model of Stephenson’s Rocket for a staggering £1,500, against a meagre £120 for a gauge model of an Italian Railways express coach and a paltry £110 for a Hornby gauge clockwork train set.
* Beat the experts to the best buys at boot sales and small rural auction houses. Few have experts to spot and value rarities, so expect to pay just a few pounds for items you can sell at ten or twenty times more on eBay or at specialist sales of trains and model railways.
* For the biggest profits look for items in good condition, in their original boxes, limited editions, incorrect colour shades.
