How Much Spam Do You Receive Annually? Make A Projected Annual Spam Count
Filed under: Internet
Have you ever wondered how many pieces of spam arrive in your email box annually? Did you know that you may be dealing with literally tens of thousands, or even more, pieces of spam each year? Have you considered what a drain on resources it is to spend time dealing with this spam over an annual period?
Recently I decided determine roughly out how many pieces of spam I receive into my business email account on an annual basis. Normally, I empty the Spam folder every couple days, but a few weeks ago I decided to let it fill up for a week. So after seven days, there were 307 pieces of spam in that folder.
307 pieces of spam per week
times 52 weeks in a year
equals 15,964 pieces of spam received annually into my business email account.
I was astounded when I saw that number! Keep in mind that this is just with a single business email address - this does not include my personal email address.
Spending any time dealing with spam is a waste, let along almost 16,000 pieces a year. So I immediately set the spam filter to it’s highest level - it now deletes all messages it thinks are spam.
The downside is that this may inadvertently delete a tiny percentage of legitimate email. However, at this time I think the benefit outweighs the risk. So far, the spam filter seems to be doing a good job at only letting legitimate email through. Plus, people who wish to contact me, such as potential new clients, have a few options to reach me, and email is only one of them.
I encourage everybody to consider this issue carefully. Any time spent dealing with spam is an unnecessary drain on business resources. Not only that, but if spammers knew that we all had our spam setting set at their hightest level, it may deter them from this wasteful activity.
