A Big Problem Facing Ebay Consignment Sellers - And An Easy Solution
Filed under: Internet
One of the easiest ways to make money on eBay is by selling items belonging to other people, individuals or businesses.
It’s called ‘Consignment Selling’, sometimes ‘Commission Selling’, but like most good things, the process is not without problems, as where someone refuses to part with their goods after the sale takes place, or you find goods you listed in good faith turn out to be stolen.
There’s a lot you need to know to make this process work, including always taking possession of whatever you are selling, to prevent the owner losing or misplacing the item, and to make sure you have the product close to describe it properly, take pictures, answer questions about the item. But how do you get people to part with their valuable items?
It’s much easier than it sounds, and the process is no different to thousands of people parting with their goods for offline auction houses to describe and sell those products locally, nationally, even internationally, both on and off the Internet. Few major auction companies, on or off the Internet, will even consider selling items they don’t have in their possession before, during and after the auction. And that is also how to properly and effectively operate a consignment business.
But no-one is suggesting it’s easy for newcomers to take possession of valuable items this way, especially new eBayers lacking feedback or experience of auction selling.
So it’s a good idea to build feedback and reputation quickly by purchasing lots of cheap items on eBay and getting sellers to leave feedback right away or you might sell items for family and friends and build feedback that way.
As you move into high value items you must have a contract which you and your vendor sign. The vendor confirms he or she has rights to sell the products, you highlight essential details of the auction procedure including your commission. The contract protects you against vendors fraudulently misrepresenting their goods or pulling out of a sale.
A simple contract will suffice, stating that you will do your best to achieve a high price for the product and pass relevant monies back to the vendor at an agreed time after the sale. Once your business grows to more than two or three sales each month it’s worthwhile having a lawyer design a simple contact for you.
